    Introduction to the singer:  Vanessa Williams was born in Millwood, New York, Her parents being both music teachers, encouraged a career in the music industry. She majored in (主修) musical theater at Syracuse University, and in 1983, won the Miss America title (头衔). She was the first woman of African-American descent(血统) to do so. However, scandal (丑闻) erupted (came about) within a year when Penthouse published (出版) nude (bare裸体) photos taken of her when she was younger. Because of the photos and the scandal, she was forced to relinquish (give up) her crown (花冠). Rather than let this incident (事件) thwart (prevent) her ambition (career), Williams pursued (ran after) a career in music and acting.

　　Her musical accomplishments (成就) began with her first release (发行), The Right Stuff (1988). In 1991, Williams released the multi-million seller The Comfort Zone, which featured (以…为特色)the hit single "Save the Best for Last," which was #1 for 6 in Canada.

　　Williams has received two NAACP Image Awards and nine Grammy Award nominations (提名). She won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for the single "Colors of the Wind" on the soundtrack to POCAHONTAS. She has had roles in several movies, including SOUL FOOD and ERASER.

1. 从歌词中大家就可以看出来，这首歌绝对不是一首情歌。这段歌词单刀直入，精确描写出征服者的默认心态，人们想的就是占有再占有。大地是什么？在人们看来不过是死物，是与人自身极不同的无足轻重的外在物。土地，对于人类，只要沾上边，只要踏上脚，就成了私有物。

　　2.第一句省略了主语you，whatever land you land on是一个完整的定语从句，注重不要丢了on，因为它和land着陆这个词一起出现在句子的末尾，比较轻易被忽略，这也是定语从句的一个特点，重要的借此要保留。例如：That's what I was looking for. 这就是我一直在找的东西。

　　3. claim 这里有“要求，认领”的意思，例如：I claimed the coat that the teacher found. 我认领了老师找到的外套。Does anyone claim this umbrella? 有没有人认领这把伞？那么claim one's attention，就表示引起了某人的注重，例如：There are several matters that claim my attention.有好几件事值得我注重。

　　4.包含了两个定语从句，一个是the only people who are people，另一个是Are the people who look and think like you，联系起来就好理解了。

　　5.walk the footsteps of a stranger，其实就是说要人类换一个角度来思考，跟另一个短语的意思比较像，就是stand in other people's shoes, 处于某人的境地来思考，就是我们经常说的换位思考。

　　6.grinning bobcat，列嘴笑的山猫，有点拟人化了。grin，咧嘴笑，露出牙齿那种，但不是大笑。

　　7. all the voices of the mountains 大山里所有的生物发出的声音，树木，动物等等，接指大自然的声音。跟大自然的声音唱和，就是说人类应该和大自然和谐相处，而不应该破坏和大自然之间的平衡。

　　8. the riches，这里表示“丰富的大自然资源”。

　　9. be connected to something or someone，跟某人某物有关系，有联系。它的名词形式connections, 关系，联系，也就是我们平常说的“托关系，走后门”。例如：She used her connections to land a job. 她托关系走后门才找到了一份工作。

　　10. circle 和hoop都指“圆环，圆圈”，但是篮球架上的球栏则要用hoop来表示。

　　11. sycamore是枫树的一种，这句话正常的顺序是You'll never know how high the sycamore grows if you cut it down.
